ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a biological condition which interferes with children’s concentration and academic development. The children born with this condition find it difficult to sit still or focus on their studies. The brain has several areas which are responsible for controlling the actions of different body parts. In case of children with this condition, these areas are sometimes less active or it might take some time to develop.

Children with ADHD face various kinds of challenges while growing up –

They might find it difficult to socialize with their peers, they might struggle with their lesson more than their peers because of their lack of concentration and as a result, they might become a social outcast. These children might also cause disruption in the class and so they need to be handled with care.

Ways to dealing with ADHD learners in the classroom

They need to be dealt with a positive approach. The teachers dealing with them need to be sensitive enough to address their behavioural issues and handle them with dexterity. Special Education programs are specifically designed keeping these things in mind so that the teachers enrolling for these programs can become competent enough and gain the expertise to deal with these Special Children. Researchers prove that if the children with this condition are given tasks which interest them then they will do it lovingly. However, if the children find them boring, then they will face a really hard time concentrating on their task. Therefore, as a teacher, you also need to know how to make the lessons and the activities interesting for children with ADHD.

Children with ADHD often have low self-esteem and face teasing/ bullying from their peers, receive punishments from the teacher for grades and other behavioural problems, because they think that the student is not working hard enough.

Some of the challenges faced by the teachers while dealing with ADHD children are:

·         Children with ADHD claim attention of the teacher by causing disruption in the class or moving around the class.

·         It is difficult for them to follow instructions. That is why it is problematic for them to do something that requires following steps like long divisions.

·         Most of the times they lack motor control, so it becomes difficult for them take notes.

·         They might face problems with long term projects which lacks direct supervision.

Therefore, you need to have a positive attitude while dealing with these children. You need a lot of patience, creativity and also you need to evaluate the child’s strengths and necessities. To help these children you should integrate three components in the lesson plan-

·         Accommodations so that they can teach the children easily,

·         Instruction or the method used in teaching and

·         Intervention so that the behavior that causes disruption can be handled accordingly.

The teacher can let the students know what kind of behaviour is expected of them and when they show quality work, they should be rewarded. The ADHD Training Program will help you to learn the different types of behaviour which are associated with ADHD and how you can identify them in your students. It also will help you to learn the necessary strategies which will help you build a warm relation with your students and maintain a proper classroom environment.
