Teacher Training and Special Education

Special education programs are specially designed for children with special needs or learning disabilities. This refers to those who are mentally, physically, socially and/or emotionally delayed. This 'delay' is broadly considered as a developmental delay andindicates an aspect of the child's overall development that includes physical, cognitive, academic skills which makes them fall behind their peers. This is mainly caused due to the way the brain functions and the problem emerge accordingly that varies from each individual and of varying ages. Such special requirements are the reasons that a student's need cannot be met within a classroom environment. This is where special education proves beneficial in coming to the aid of children with special needs. Special education services and programs adapt content, methodologies of teaching and instruction delivery to meet the needs of such children. This no longer means sending them to special classes all day.

Common special needs include learning disabilities such as dyslexia, communication disorders, emotional and behavioural disorders such as ADHD and ADD, and developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disability. Students with these kinds of special needs are likely to benefit from additional educational services from trained and certified special educators with different approaches to teaching, the use of technology, a specifically adapted teaching area, or a resource room. These can be defined as :

  • Dyslexia is defined as a brain neurological disorder that affects a child's learning abilities such as reading, spelling, writing and as well as speaking capability and is hence also known as a learning disorder. Children, who are suffering from dyslexia, appear to have problems with speech sounds known as phonics or phonemic awareness.
  • ADHD is the acronym for 'Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder' or 'Attention Deficit Disorder'. It is one of the most commonbiological disorders among children that affect their behavioural and speaking abilities and pose aninterruption, both at home as well as in their social life.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), also known as Autism, is termed as a mental illness caused by neurological dysfunction affecting the brain and causing growth and development disorder. It appears during the early childhood stage and makes it difficult for the affected child to communicate or be social.

Special educators prove beneficial in such situations. They do a remarkable job and their work should not be underestimated. Schools should arrange inclusive classrooms for all kinds of students along with trained and certified teachers to be able to assist them. This is the reason why special educators are to be relied upon. They are talented, certified and experienced instructors, trained to work with students with special needs. This can be achieved withhard work and can be done in a specially designed classrooms, which is the reason those with SEN Teacher Training are so crucial and in demandto develop innovative methods that drive education forward.
